Elon Musk has announced that X is now dead. Advertiser boycotts have killed it. He wants you to know that he is not to blame, but also fuck you he didn’t want your advertising anyway. From Ars Technica:
Elon Musk addressed an antisemitism controversy in characteristically unwise fashion during a public interview today, telling businesses to "go fuck yourself" and to stop advertising on the social network formerly named Twitter.
…[I]n an interview conducted by journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin [Musk said], … “I hope they stop. Don't advertise”.
He added:
"If somebody is going to try to blackmail me with advertising, blackmail me with money? Go fuck yourself.”
The amusing bit is how he’s convinced that the company is about to die and that the entire world will be angry with everybody except himself.
"What this advertising boycott is going to do is it's going to kill the company, and the whole world will know that those advertisers killed the company and we will document it in great detail," Musk said.
… Sorkin pointed out that advertisers see things differently, … "They're going to say, Elon, that you killed the company because you said these things and they were inappropriate things and they didn't feel comfortable on the platform. That's what they're going to say."
"And let's see how Earth responds to that," Musk replied.
Yep. All the earth is on Musk’s side because they love antisemitism a lot more than they ever loved their iPhones and laptops and cars.
You know what’s the strangest thing to me in the midst of all this Twitter mess? It’s that you don’t hear any criticism of FaceBook anymore. They’re still just as determined to eliminate entirely the concept of online privacy. They’re still monetizing you just as hard and hurting people in the. process. But Musk’s behaviour is so extreme that there just isn’t any room in the contemporary narrative for FaceBook to also be a villain. Honestly, I think that some people that before would hesitate to move directly from Twitter to FaceBook (and before Musk even considered Twitter the less evil option) now see migration to FaceBook as a moral/ethical life upgrade.
Musk is telling advertisers not to give his company money and expecting the entire earth to praise him for his pro-antisemitism stance, while at the same time he’s made FaceBook “the good one”.
Seriously, how deranged and damaging does this guy have to be before shareholder lawsuits start? Of course, other than Musk the only major shareholders I know of are Saudi organizations, and while I’m sure they love their money, they both have a lot more where that came from and also aren’t overly worried about spreading anti-semitism. So I guess we’re just stuck with more “news” featuring Musk’s designer-driven artisanal megalomania next to Trump’s cheap faux-rich knockoff version.
TIL that fuckbonkers stupid is now spelled "characteristically unwise".
Good lord, I love that last sentence!
